• 'Society cannot function

From Rob Mccart@1:2320/105 to MIKE POWELL on Sat Jan 17 08:41:51 2026
    Description:
    >As AI spreads faster than the rules meant to govern it, technologists warn
    >that progress without human accountability risks undermining society itself.

They mentioned on the news tonight that in Canada, only about 9% of
those asked thought AI was a good thing and a much higher percentage
said they didn't trust it.. I was trying to find that info online and
found that a little over a year ago 71.8% of businesses said they had
no plans to ever use AI..

I was a bit surprised about that given how the Tech news seems to
    be almost totally about AI..

I think AI could be a good thing. However, the "tech bros" who are mostly
in charge of its current development seem to be more concerned with its
rapid expansion (capabilities and use) than with its ethical use. Maybe
that is a misconception on my part, but that is my concern.

If I were Canadian and had been asked that question, I would not be in the
    9% for that reason.

I am not real surprised of the 71.8% number a year ago. I would be more surprised if that number was still the same, or higher, today. Then again,
if a lot of the businesses surveyed are not really into tech now, or are
maybe a part of the service industry, that context might make that high
    number seem more sensible.

I think the biggest problem is all the money involved and the race to
get the biggest share of that. It would make sense that the benefits
and accuracy of AI would be somewhat exaggerated..

It works pretty well at doing some less complex things, but everyone
expects more out of it too quickly.

That is sort of what I was getting at... the money and the race to get the biggest share. I think those in the field are too fixated on winning the
race and not on what the outcome should be (or what it might cause).

It works pretty well at doing some less complex things, but everyone

    No disagreement here.
